SEO and Tech Daily: Browser Wars revisited - Opera fights back

  • jeber · 1 year ago
Early on all browsers had to do was display static web pages and be standards compliant. These days we want our browsers to connect and interact with all our online activities without consuming all our computer's resources, crashing every 5 minutes or exposing us to malicious code. It's a difficult balancing act. The more features a browser has, the more resources it consumes. The more extras we add on, the more bloated and unstable the browser becomes. Social networking and instant messaging no longer need to be built in. RSS reading can be handed off to stand-alone applications.

The winners of the browser wars are going to have enough features to satisfy the general user without replicating the features we can access on the web. Single purpose browsers like Prism might be all we need for much of the day, a few windows open on the desktop displaying our email and favorite social networking site. My ideal browser will be lean, mean and green. It will have a small footprint, be able to display any type of web content and consume minimal resources.

Jeber - While I agree with a lot of what you are saying, the bare fact is that 2 markets will determine browser share (1) The one that's bundled for the 'general population' (2) The one that's adopted by most enterprise / office network administrators. Possibly, over time, mobile device manufacturers will have a bigger impact as well.

I have a humble 6 yrs old machine. IE has far too much noise for me, who am not a teen anymore. Firefox was fine until it crashed my system a few times. After one of these, in a fury, I downloded Opera, and I am HAPPY with it. It is quick, and discreet. Absolutely elegant.
Now I know that it's mainly a cultural issue. Those who are brainwashed enough to be after the a** of otherwise insignificant celebrities only, will refuse Opera.

Ida - I know more people than I can count with 5-6 year old machines (Back-up that hard drive!!). Usually a little cheap RAM will do the trick (and a real hard disk clean-up). Your take on Opera is interesting. For the record, at the moment, Firefox 3.0 RC2 is my top browser.
Thanks for stopping by! ... Charlie
